They contain core functionality required by all (or most) Oracle products. That's really all I know. I can't site any specific examples of what's in these files. Maybe I can. I think the message files, containing error message texts, are part of required support.

Each major version of Oracle has it's own support files. You only need install more than one version if you have software requiring different versions. For example, at work I have the Oracle 7.3 client software installed because I am doing some Powerbuilder programming that requires it. I also have 8.0 installed because I manage an 8.0 database. The files are named such that the different versions can coexist.

I'm not entirely centain of the answer to these last two questions. With regards to the first, I would simply install all the 7.3.4 client software as well, just to be sure I had versions that matched.
