Buy this Book Cost-Based Oracle Fundamentals
by Jonathan Lewis
Highly recommended!
This book gets a prized spot on my technical shelf. It is a challenging read, and has taken the most time of any book I have to get through, but it is quite good. The optimizer is such a core part of what makes Oracle worth the investment, that any DBA who does not understand it is doing a disservice to the company ...

Lewis' use of proof through example is second to none, and leaves me feeling confident about the knowledge I've gained. His insights are not only theoretical, but quite applicable. I learned much about manipulating and using the DBMS_STATS package, about data model design and why data knowledge is so critical to the DBA.

My nervousness about hints and about upgrades was reinforced with concrete examples that have improved my test plans, upgrade methodologies and overall made me a more competent DBA. I've directly used this knowledge to support my clients in better ways than I would have before it, and that is well worth the price of admission and the time to get through such an in-depth work.

Thanks Jonathan!

Buy this Book Oracle JDeveloper 10g for Forms & PL/SQL Developers: A Guide to Web Development with Oracle ADF (Osborne Oracle Press)
by Peter Koletzke, Duncan Mills

As the authors note, this is written for people who know PL/SQL inside and out but don't have a clue about java and JDeveloper - my exact position. The first read through gave me a clearer picture, and the subsequent reads are finally lifting the fog.

I used this book to deploy Oracle Application Server 10g infrastructure on Linux and UNIX. I felt that it was a good book and overall I have little ill to say about it. Buy this Book Oracle JDeveloper 10g Handbook
by Avrom Roy-Faderman, Peter Koletzke, Paul Dorsey
Highly recommended!
This latest edition for Oracle10g JDeveloper builds on the success of the previous 9i version. As with the previous version, each chapter is well organized with thorough and accurate examples. Well thought-out attention has been given to explaining Oracle's Application Development Framework (ADF). The authors also go ...

In short, this book as been well received by myself and colleagues I work with and would highly recommend it to anyone getting started in developing Oracle based applications with JDeveloper. I have found no better resource and tutorial for understanding ADF.

Buy this Book Expert Oracle Database 10g Administration (Expert's Voice)
by Sam R. Alapati
Highly recommended!
This is short and sweet. Of all the Oracle books I have read, this is among the best if not the best. I'm not affiliated with the author, reviewer, or publisher so I get nothing for saying it.

If you're a brand new DBA this isn't for you. If you've read and understand the majority of the Oracle concepts, admin, backup/recovery, and performance guides, then this book helps put the technical theory into practice.

Buy this Book Sun Certified Web Component Developer Study Guide (Exam 310-081) (Oracle Press)
by David Bridgewater
After I finished the first chapter self-test, and saw that there were two obvious errors in the answer key (questions 7 and 19), I considered buying another book. I searched for an errata listing for the book online, with no success. I emailed the author and techical editor. To his credit, David Bridgewater replied ...

The technical editor did not reply to my email. This comes as no surprise; perhaps she is embarrased at the poor job she did editing this book. She obviously did not give thorough consideration to the self-tests.

I decided that I did not want to spend the time or money to get a different exam guide, and that 99% of the book was most likely accurate, and the errata are probably easy to spot (even if they are really annoying), so I trudged on.

I regret that decision. I am now at the end of chapter 4, and have spotted a total of five major errors in the self-tests, and at least a dozen minor errors in the self-tests and the text of the chapters. Also annoying is the ambiguous wording in some of the self-test questions; some of the phrases used are open to interpretation, and should be worded to be less ambiguous.

Without knowing how good or bad other SCWCD exam guides are, I'd feel pretty confident in recommending that you should probably go with a different study guide that this one.

Buy this Book Pro Oracle Spatial
by Euro Beinat, Albert Godfrind, Ravikanth V. Kothuri
Highly recommended!
Excellent book. I have been using Oracle Spatial for years but found various useful insights in this book. It is well laid out, accessible and covers pretty much all the bases. Good examples and case studies. Tackles the thorny issues around spatial indexing as well as I have seen.

Why can't Oracle do documentation like this ?!

Only drawback is that I found some errors in the discussion of transportable tablespaces WRT Spatial data.

Buy this Book Advanced Oracle PL/SQL Programming with Packages (Nutshell Handbook)
by Steven Feuerstein
I like this book but it could have been better if it dealt with PL/Vision alot less and about Oracle Package construction in general alot more. The book is more of a 30-70% split in favor of PL/Vision. It was very helpful, but it seemed like an ad for the writer's software at times.

Buy this Book Oracle Forms Interactive Workbook
by Baman Motivala
I work in a position where I train professional programmers for our client. Most of our programmers are transferring from Legacy systems to our new Oracle system. We have started using this book as an alternative to more expensive classroom/online training and have found it very useful. The chapters are small enough...

All of the data and sample forms are available online at a website listed in the books introduction. It's designed to be run on a personal installation of Oracle DB, but I was able to run the provided data creation scripts in our enterprise installation without issue. I used our developement environment and created the data without any modifications to the scripts and no DBA security rights (other than the right to create new tables). Took about 5 minutes of setup and then all my students were able to work with it under their normal developer rights.

There is only one downside I've found, and that's the binding. For a book that's designed to be read while doing exercises on the computer, it should have a spiral bound rather than normal book binding. The book does not want to stay open, the margins are too close to the binding, and after several times of forcing it open the bindings are wearing very badly after just a few months. Some copies even have pages starting to fall out. It's a minor thing in comparison to the content, but is awfully frustrating for my students.

In summary, we've looked at countless resources and have found this to be one of the best (cost vs. effectiveness) training tools for our programmers.
